This article is about an alternative approach to the basic block Soto-uke.
The well-known basic use of Soto-uke.
Everybody knows that one, so no further comments.
My interpretation: Soto-uke
Soto-uke can be used as an attack against the head (hammer-fist punch), elbow joints, and other parts of the body. Furthermore, you can use it as a take-down.
- The first two pictures; Instead of blocking Oi-zuki on the outside as you usually would do (see picture above), then try to split Soto-uke into two parts.
I use the first part of Soto-uke to block on the inside of an attack. At the same time, I poke the eyes with the fingertips of my right hand.
Now perform the second step of Soto-uke. In my example, I block a second attack with the right while I attack with left Tettsui-uchi or Ura-zuki. - Pictures 3 and 4 are just a variation.
- The last two pictures show Soto-uke as a take-down.

I would like to hear your comments on the interpretation of Soto-uke.
Thanks for reading.
