James Pankiewicz interview

During my travels in Okinawa, I had the exciting opportunity to meet James Pankiewicz, a key figure in Okinawan martial arts.

James Pankiewicz is a well-known figure in Okinawan martial arts. He moved to Okinawa over a decade ago and has since become an integral part of the local karate scene. James founded the Dojo Bar in 2011, a popular hub for karate enthusiasts, both locals and international visitors. It served as a place where people could connect over their shared passion for martial arts, particularly Okinawan karate. Due to the pandemic, the Dojo Bar closed.

James is also the owner and chief instructor at Asato Dojo, which he opened in 2018. This dojo offers instruction in traditional Okinawan karate and kobudo, teaching styles like Shorin-ryū (Matsubayashi-ryū), Motobu-ryū and Goju-ryū. The dojo welcomes international students and emphasizes the authenticity of its training while fostering connections between Okinawan and global martial arts practitioners.
